Yves Tumor's album Heaven To A Tortured Mind is a truly remarkable work of art. The album showcases Tumor's incredible talent as a musician and songwriter, blending together a wide range of genres and styles to create a truly unique and engaging listening experience.
Saying that Heaven To A Tortured Mind is genre-bending would be an understatement. The album starts with “Gospel for a new country”, a brash song reminiscent of punk, yet the song also feels forward facing. It feels like it was made for the future. The song is only really composed of explosions of percussion, a wild bassline, and rattling horns that splice in and out; feeling simultaneously distant and very in your face. “Gospel For A New Country” perfectly starts the album, creating an aura of crowded, smokey rooms and black leather pants.
The standout tracks on the album include the haunting and emotional "Medicine Burn," which features Tumor's powerful and soulful vocals, and the upbeat and energetic "Super Stars," which showcases Tumor's impressive range and versatility as a performer. The 6th track, “Romanticist,” is also worth mentioning; the song has one of the catchiest 'choruses’ I've ever heard, the way the watery instruments blend together feels hyper-smooth. However, the track is only 1:45- making it more of a fun little snack than anything.
What really sets this album apart is the depth and thoughtfulness of the lyrics, which explore themes of love, loss, and the search for meaning in a complex and often confusing world. Tumor's words are raw, honest, and deeply moving, and they are delivered with passion and conviction. It's often not even the words that pack the emotional punch, but more the process of reading in between them .
Heaven To A Tortured Mind is definitely worth a listen if you like Tame Impala, JPEGMAFIA’s more soulful music, Solange, Blood Orange, or me - I've been playing this album on repeat for months and would love to gush over it with anyone.
